What’s in a Name? (And Why the “Still”)

People walk in here and ask why we didn’t just strip the facade and start fresh. They think a new coat of paint and a name change is how you “rebrand” a business. Those people usually don’t understand how deep the roots go in this city.

The “Bob-E-Lanes” part stays because it’s part of the geography of Milwaukee. Generations of bowlers have come through that door. They’ve had their first 200 game here, they’ve had their league trophies engraved here, and they’ve spent decades leaning on this bar. You don’t just erase that history because you want to feel “modern.”

If you look at the front of the building, you’ll see the original wooden sign that’s been there since the beginning. It’s weathered, it’s seen a few Milwaukee winters, and it’s staying put. We just tucked a Coroplast “STILL” underneath it. It gets the point across without messing with the heritage. And if you’re actually on the approach, look up. Those gold-painted wooden letters above the lanes haven’t moved in decades. They’re exactly where they belong.

We added “Still” for a couple of reasons. First, it’s a statement of stubbornness. In an era where every classic bowling alley is being turned into a luxury condo or a parking lot, we’re still here. We’re still oiling the lanes, still clearing the jams, and still pouring drinks.

The other reason is about the process. A “still” is where things get refined. It’s where you take something raw—like a rough night or a bad frame—and you boil it down until only the good stuff is left. We’re keeping the grit and the soul of the old place, but we’re making the beer colder and the games more interesting.

It’s the same place, just a little more concentrated. It’s Bob-E-Lanes Still. Take it or leave it. Or don’t. It’s up to you. I’ll be here either way.

  1. It’s so cool your keeping an old neighborhood institution still alive and relevant.
